The American Civil War of 1861-1865 was a conflict between the Northern and Southern citizens brought about by sharp differences on political and economic issues between the two sections. In the North it was known to the generation that fought it as the War of the Rebellion, this indicating the official view that it was a revolt against the government of the United States.
