Ultimate General: Civil War is a tactical game created by the Game-Labs studio. The team has been warmly welcomed by the Ultimate General players Gettysburg from 2014 and Naval Action released two years later. The production was released on the Windows PC platform.
The Ultimate General: Civil War action takes place during the American Civil War, which took place in 1861-1865. Players take part in over 50 historical battles: among others in the battle of Shiloh, the battle of Malvern Hill, or even in the Battle of Antietam. Production covers the whole spectrum of clashes - from small skirmishes to several days of large-scale fights taking place in areas measured in hundreds of square kilometers.
In Ultimate General: Civil War, the action is presented in an isometric view. The player takes on the role of a general who has full control over the army under his command. Successive victories lead to increased reputation, which allows you to acquire new units, divisions and brigades. Its decline, in turn, results in lower and lower morale of the subordinates, and in effect may force us to resign from the position and thus end the game ahead of time.
The game implemented extensive options, allowing to adjust the level of complexity of the game to individual preferences - we can command single units or set general goals (keeping the defensive line, conducting an attack from the flank) to all groups. In the second case, the presence of the commanders controlled by artificial intelligence proves to take control of the lower rank soldiers. In the course of the game, the soldiers acquire valuable experience, thanks to which they are able to cope better on the battlefield. This applies above all to officers - their rank depends on the level of advancement of subordinates. Interestingly, just like ordinary soldiers, they can also be injured or even killed in the battlefield, while wasting the effort put in their development. Our actions have a direct impact on the gameplay - as far as the successes are concerned, the possibilities of reconnaissance and impact on broadly understood politics grow.
A characteristic feature of this production is the high level of realism - the arsenal used by soldiers is the equivalent of weapons from the era. For example, while the widely-produced Model 1853 Enfield rifles are widely available, obtaining fewer weapons requires taking it from the opponent's hands or taking over the stored stock. In addition, the player must carefully analyze the terrain topography and use it to his advantage - fences and buildings can provide excellent protection for soldiers, hills allow faster recognition of the enemy, while bridges can be a natural obstacle, helpful in defending a specific place. The whole artificial intelligence watches over the whole, using advanced, realistic combat tactics. Adversaries are able to attack from the flank, use weak points and defense gaps, cut off soldiers from the necessary stocks to survive, and also destroy the unguarded objects of strategic importance.
In addition to the single player campaign, which is a cross-section of the most important events from the Civil War era, the game has a special mode that allows you to participate in each battle separately.
Ultimate General: Civil War on the Windows PC platform is characterized by high quality graphic design. The places of individual clashes were reproduced with attention to the smallest details, in which it was necessary not only to use historical maps, but also satellite images.
