I used the term "roguelike" to describe Stygian because I think its the closest to what the game designers were aiming for by using a Save Game system that forces the player to overwrite their previous saved game.
The problem with Stygian is you could potentially break your save and force a full restart if it autosaved after selling the . The options are only limited by dev imagination & options they gave us. You could be allowed to steal the key back

Have a speech/persuasive option to get the key back just to open the vault. Old problem of RPG dead end. Even existed in choose your own adventure book. Something you don't have in pen & paper because you have a GM that will make the story continue (or even write a new story on the go depending of players actions).
