It has been two years since the first episodes recounted in the epilogue of The Darkness. Jackie, our protagonist, is now the Don of the Mafia family most impressive city. No one has the courage to fight it or even groped tentatively to test his strength and his skills. It is rich, is powerful, even respected and loved by his killers but is still sad. It is sad because no woman has been able to fill the void in his heart left by the death of Jenny Romano, the only girl he had been able to be with Jackie and she loved to madness, managing to keep him at bay the darkness within him and, in a tragic moment recounted so incredibly addictive in the first The Darkness, it was made to kill before his eyes to protect them. Heart of Darkness Just Jenny's ghost will haunt our protagonist for much of the sequel in a single player campaign that unfortunately never will be close to the thickness of the first chapter or narrative complexity, nor depth, but especially for longevity. It is true that The Darkness II gets rid of all those unnecessary delays represented by the side quests and exploration vacuous moments between a subway and the next but at the same time unfortunately unable to offer a purely narrative in which those phases was clearly highlighted the psychological terror proved by Jackie and her atrocious difficulty in putting a brake on the darkness and its endless pitfalls. And indeed, alongside the beautiful opening sequence set in a restaurant and also seen in the demo of the game, we happen to play other semi-interactive sequences that seek not with great success to give depth to the narrative gameplay otherwise completely biased towards pure action. Especially during our fight against the Brotherhood and its leader Victor Valens determined to take control of The Darkness, will return again and again to escape groped by a strange mental hospital whose existence will be explained at the end of the adventure through a bell'epilogo (even with double the final) and the audacious cliffhanger that gives us hope in the third chapter. Heart of Darkness But as I said at the beginning of the paragraph, next to a problem of the thickness of the story, the one that suits turn up your nose once the campaign of The Darkness II, is to realize that it took just six hours to see the end credits, just a little bit more if you play the two highest levels of difficulty (on the four available). There is no doubt that on the face of longevity we did not really help but it is partially in the multiplayer component composed of eighteen missions, seven of which are connected together to form a real additional campaign. The work done by Digital Extremes to this is very commendable despite being fully cooperative in the absence of a dedicated multiplayer competitive aspect. In practice, the player is given a choice between four different characters, each with its own special weapon that feeds on the darkness, a power and three specific talent trees. In this case, the gameplay is heavily unbalanced toward pure action with a number of stages where you have to defend and resist attack targets of increasing difficulty, but there are bosses, and even more generally known is the developer's work location offering new and situations game really excited that give their best when playing in four online simultaneously. You can also play offline, but unfortunately lacking in solitary split-screen our advice is not to miss at least the multiplayer campaign that adds a couple of hours and plenty offers an interesting look as told in parallel to single player.
