The PC was ahead until about a decade ago, since internet gaming was rarely used on consoles. Nowadays though, they are virtually the same. Anyway, as far as I know, none of the Traveller's Tales LEGO games has supported network multiplayer for PC ever. Though it has occured previously that it was advertised shortly like that on the Steam store, since they obviously copy&pasted the description from the console box cover. Also I find splitscreen gaming more fun in general, because of the laughs and fun had with real life friends, and it also allows me to play with my friends who don't play video games at all, or those who don't play video games on the pc.

There are franchise that is not easy to manage without incurring the vengeful fury of fierce legions of fans. In this sense, TT Games has always been a delicacy out of the ordinary, being appreciated for years with sparkling parodies in key LEGO Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, among others. An unexpected success the fantasy universe of JRR Tolkien seemed escaped this fate, but the imminent start of the new film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and based on The Hobbit was an opportunity too good to be commercially escape. Understandably, our fears were of a certain weight. As always cared and fun video games LEGO TT Games have begun, after so many years, showing the side. In questo senso, TT Games ha sempre dimostrato una delicatezza fuori dal comune, facendosi apprezzare per anni con le frizzanti parodie in chiave LEGO di Star Wars, Indiana Jones ed Harry Potter, tra gli altri. Un successo inaspettato L'universo fantasy di J.R.R. Tolkien sembrava scampato a questo destino, ma l'imminente inizio della nuova trilogia cinematografica diretta da Peter Jackson e basata su Lo Hobbit era un'occasione commercialmente troppo ghiotta da farsi sfuggire. Comprensibilmente, i nostri timori erano di un certo peso. Per quanto sempre curati e divertenti, i videogiochi LEGO di TT Games hanno cominciato, dopo tanti anni, a mostrare il fianco. L'ultima proposta, LEGO Batman 2, soltanto pochi mesi fa ha ricevuto un'accoglienza piuttosto fredda, nonostante le novità introdotte. Il rischio di trovarci di fronte a un'occasione mancata insomma, c'era, e pure bella grosso. Fortunatamente, LEGO Il Signore degli Anelli si è rivelato di tutt'altra pasta.
Si parlava di spirito d'avventura ed esplorazione: certo, il lunghissimo e meraviglioso viaggio della Compagnia starebbe stretto in un semplice pacchetto di livelli consecutivi. Viene quasi da pensare che la controversa impostazione "quasi" free roaming adottata per LEGO Batman 2 non fosse altro che un grande banco di prova: LEGO Il Signore degli Anelli infatti, presenta una solida componente free roaming decisamente più convincente di quanto visto nell'avventura con i super eroi DC Comics. Un successo inaspettato La Terra di Mezzo diventa quindi un immenso hub da esplorare in cerca della prossima meta (appropriatamente indicata da un sentiero personalizzabile di mattoncini trasparenti) mentre, tra un livello e l'altro, si susseguono le disavventure di Aragorn, Frodo e i loro compagni. Il giocatore segue dunque la storia tramite un vero e proprio itinerario: dopo il prologo giocabile, all'epoca della sconfitta di Sauron, si parte naturalmente da una Hobbiville come sempre festosa, all'incantevole ritmo di Concerning Hobbits, per raggiungere Brea sotto una pioggia incessante e iniziare il primo, vero livello del gioco, che vedrà gli Hobbit alle prese con gli Spettri dell'Anello. Raggiunta la locanda del Puledro Impennato, al gruppo si unisce Grampasso e la nuova meta diventa Collevento, dove si potrà giocare il secondo livello. Crediamo di aver reso l'idea e siamo certi che i fan saranno in grado di prevedere gli stage successivi per ognuno dei tre capitoli che compongono la saga. Un successo inaspettato Bisogna sottolineare però, che le dimensioni "reali" della Terra di Mezzo sono appropriatamente falsate: non servono certo sei giorni di cammino per raggiungere Gran Burrone da Collevento, ma soltanto pochi minuti, e Brea è visibile proprio dai ponti della città elfica. La vastità dell'area esplorabile è comunque più che dignitosa, sopratutto perché nasconde tonnellate di anfratti e zone segrete da raggiungere una volta completata la storia e sbloccata la modalità Gioco Libero che permette di utilizzare qualsiasi personaggio del gioco in ogni zona. Come da tradizione infatti, i vari personaggi dispongono di abilità speciali, fondamentali per risolvere i vari rompicapi che ostacolano il cammino. Gimli, ad esempio, può sfondare le pareti incrinate, mentre Sam può accendere falò o coltivare delle piantine. Conoscere le abilità dei vari personaggi e il modo in cui interagiscono tra di esse (la "gente alta" per esempio può trasportare e lanciare personaggi più bassi come Nani e Hobbit) è quindi fondamentale se si vuole completare al cento per cento l'avventura...
