Without getting into any spoilery detail, Act III is significantly more involved than the first two acts. One of the things I enjoy most about Kentucky Route Zero is how the developers constantly shift the method of storytelling: It’s 3D figures in a 2D environment but now it’s a 3D environment. We knew this coming into it, based on our narrative outline of the game. There are also components of it that grew in scale beyond our expectation, but we feel they’re worth the time and effort. It’s color, no now it’s black and white and the world is rendered in retro vector graphics. It’s third person, now it’s not.
Act III of Kentucky Route Zero begins with a flashback, a conversation between Conway and Lysette, the woman he delivers antiques for. Their conversation recalls an old tragedy that clearly haunts Conway, and establishes memory and loss as themes that run throughout. Their conversation recalls an old tragedy that clearly haunts Conway, and establishes memory and loss as themes that run throughout the act; characters frequently talk about the ways in which they've been shaped by moments in the past, and those moments sometimes intrude on the present

Kentucky Route Zero is packed with such moments – from the ghostly figures that haunt the mine when you turn off your light to Johnny and Junebug literally blowing the roof off the Lower Depths bar with their performance – each more strange and striking than the last. You would think that this would get tiring, that the individual moments would lose their impact, but each scene is so imaginative and well-executed that it still takes you by surprise. There’s not a single puzzle in Kentucky Route Zero’s run time, but it’ll make you think more than almost any other adventure on the market. Every last second, every line of dialogue has nuances to interpret and implications to ponder.

Act III is focused on most of the themes presented in The Entertainment, from the simple, unglamorous dreams of the average Joe to the past-and unpaid debts-catching up to you. There’s a recurring thread of unachieved goals and split paths that led to unplanned outcomes, which opens up our characters and sharpens their previously fuzzy motivations. As always, enjoyment of Kentucky Route Zero depends on what you want and expect to get out of it. Act III clearly favors characters over setting, and players wishing for more of the former should be sated for a long time to come.
